The first copyright law was written in 1897. Any photographs on this site before 1897 are not copyright.

The Copyright Law of 1897 states that a publication is protected by copyright if the publication includes the following information: the word "Copyright", the date of the Copyright, and the owner of the Copyright. In the 28th year of the copyright, the owner needed to register to renew the copyright. If this was not done, the copyright automatically expired. The following publications are therefore no longer under copyright:

The US Naval Academy (a pictorial study), Lucky Bags (1898 thru 1948)

The Copyright Law of 1976 stateS that any copyright in effect after 1948 was automaticallyr renewed an extended for an additional 75 years. Therefore any publications post 1948 are currently under copyright.

Any request for a photograph (from 1949 through today) that we have on file, we can still provide to you. One way is for us to obtain permission from the owner of the copyright to provide you a copy of the phtograph you wish. The owner of these copyrights is generally the President of the graduating class.We are currently working on obtaining these permissions.

The other way is to actually cut the photograph you want out of the publication and send it to you. This does not violate any copyright law.
